Short biography
All Aboard for Dreamland! is Melanie's first book for children, but she has written hundreds of kids songs for Disney, Warner Bros, Rhino Records, Looney Tunes, Metaphor Records and McGraw Hill. Melanie is also a musician and is a four-time West Coast Bluegrass guitar champion. Melanie has played theatre music in regional theaters all over the country and was in the original Broadway cast of Quilters in 1984. Melanie was honored to work for Joni Mitchell for a number of years as her unofficial guitar tech and research assistant on her Hits and Misses project. Melanie made a documentary film about the life of jazz great Anita O'Day, the Jezebel of Jazz; wrote the screenplay for the biopic of her life, Nightbird; and co-wrote with Anita the jazz legend's final song, "No Man of My Own." Melanie co-owns and co-runs Metaphor Records with her husband, political satirist Roy Zimmerman with whom she co-writes frequently. Roy and Melanie have two glorious sons, Joe and Sam.

I just mentioned that I was becoming increasingly fastidious about my kid's books--here, this is about taking the dream train into freaky dreamland and that is great, but then there's also a lot of cretinous wordplay of the yakkety-yak, yukkety-yuk, choogle-choogle-choo ilk and that is a downer.

It was the cover that caught my son's eye - a huge pink elephant and the hint of a train. Then I started reading, and the text captivated him (and me). He couldn't wait for bedtime so I'd read the book to him again. Making bedtime an adventure - that's pretty brilliant. Thanks, Melanie Harby and Geraldo Valerio.

The rhymes and rhythms of this bedtime read-along are so engaging and the illustrations so wild and imaginative that I was three-quarters of the way through before the metaphor struck me. Then it hit me like a train. It's a treat to read about Giggletown, Snuggle Cove, the drowsy town of Yawwwwn while you watch your little one reach those very destinations on the way to a safe and snoozy night in Dreamland.
