Axel Honneth pursued his studies of philosophy in Bonn and Bochum and received his PhD in 1983 in Berlin. He subsequently was an assistant professor in Frankfurt am Main, and a full professor in Konstanz, Berlin and, finally, again in Frankfurt. In Frankfurt he also is director of the Institute for Social Research, the birthplace of the so-called "Frankfurt School". Axel Honneth is most well-known for his work on recognition in social philosophy.
