the 1927 edition is the only one to contain the rare edition of the map showing peaks as named in Carson's Peaks and People of the Adirondacks. This map was withdrawn by the Conservation Commission after protests by Theo. Anthony and others, apparently motivated by antisemitism and upset over his naming a peak for the Marshall brothers, who were Jewish. After Bob Marshall died in 1939 a peak in the MacIntyre range was named for him. (Carson's Marshall is now Hough. Marshall was Herbert (after Herbert Clark) in the book and this map. Other names removed were Couchsacraga and Emmons although they later were so named officially.)… (more)
