Lady Mary Dawson was the only daughter of Sir Richard Dawson, first Earl of Dartrey, and his wife Augusta Stanley. In 1872, she married Henry Edward Fox-Strangways, 5th Earl of Ilchester, and the couple had three children. The Countess of Ilchester worked with her eldest son Giles Fox-Strangways (then Lord Stavordale) to edit The Life and Letters of Lady Sarah Lennox (1901), one of her husband's collateral ancestors.
