Short biography
Two months before he graduated from university, Shintaro Ishihara won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize for [Season of the Sun] (太陽の季節), an influential and successful novel about the youth culture, in particular the "taiyozoku" subculture, of postwar Japan. After writing several more novels and plays, befriending and unfriending Yukio Mishima, plus a stint covering the Vietnam War for Yomiuri Shimbun, Ishihara entered politics. Since 1999, Ishihara has been the Governor of Tokyo. Until January 2012, Ishihara was also a member of Akutagawa Prize jury for 17 years, until he quit.
