This is a sad but beautiful story of a small girl, Tian, and her family as they grieve the loss of her father. Some years before, he had left Vietnam on a ship bound for another country to earn more money to send back to his family. What is special about this book is that it gives us a look at how another culture deals with the death of someone. What the rituals and beliefs are around death. The story is actually based on a real event from the 1940s. Review by Fiona

The inspiring story of bravery, love and new life is based on a real incident that occurred during the devastating floods in Mozambique, Africa, in 2000. It is Jane Jolly's first picture book and is stunningly illustrated by award-winner Dee Huxley.… (more)
