Henri Joly, the compiler of the list of names and Kakikan of sword fittings makers listed in this book was responsible for the cataloguing of many of the great collections formed at the time Japan was opened up to trade with the West at the end of the 19th century. This gave him an ideal opportunity to collect examples of the names and, where used, handwritten seals (Kakihan and Kao) of a multitude of metal work artists, many of whom are not recorded in other English language works on the subject.

In this book he records 2,950 names of artists in both Japanese and Romanji. In most cases he adds alternative names of the artists, together with various examples of their handwritten seals. He occasionally adds brief notes of dates, sources, artists' abodes and so forth. The scholar or collector of metalwork has plenty of space to make his own additions to the list as the left-hand pages have been left blank for this purpose.

The Sword Book in Honcho Gunkiko and the Book of Same Ko Hi Sei Gi of Inaba Tsurio

Translated by Henri L. Joly and Hogitaro Inada this translation of a classic Japanese treatise of the sword by the celebrated scholar-statesman Arai Hakuseki (1656-1725) was privately printined in an edition of only two hundred copies in 1913, and has been virtually unobtainable for many years. Now that there is a marked revival of interest in things Japanese generally, and in the sword in particular, a reprint of this valuable source-book will be warmly welcomed. The text contains much curious sword-lore and information not to be found elsewhere, and the full and scholarly notes and illustrations supplied by the translator, the late Henri L. Joly, make it an indispensable companion to anyone who has come under the spell of the world's most fascinating weapon. Appended is a translation of a short treatise on 'same', or ray-skin, which played such an important part in the mounting of the hilt and sometimes the scabbard of the Japanese sword.
