A lot of the time in fiction, autistic characters are portrayed as either people with superpowers or helpless lost babies. The main character in the modern perspective of A Desperate Fortune is neither of those. Instead she is refreshingly human, her autism serves as something that both helps and hinders her, neither in a Manic Pixie Dream Girl way.

Basic, but fun enough

I usually love Susanna Kearsley’s books and although this started well for me as the story progressed I became less interested in the outcome. Overall it was ok and I am glad I read it but nowhere as enjoyable as some of her other books
