Caroline M. Stansbury married the classics scholar William Kirkland in 1828 and founded a girls' school with him in Geneva, NY. They later moved to Michigan, where they bought 800 acres of land. Caroline's experiences on the frontier inspired her career as a writer. Eventually they returned to New York City and established a salon that attracted the literary elite of the day.
