This book achieves the curious feat of being both interesting and monotonous simultaneously. The main character fully embodies the dull, overweight, emotionally disconnected office worker—overweight being almost a personality trait. In contrast, the other characters are vibrant and fun. The relationships and final chapters culminate in a beautiful and fulfilling ending.

I liked this. A very wholesome story, though one that I really had to work to leave behind my real world perspective as a social worker and former caseworker (though not in child welfare).

This book has a lot in it about “objectivity” and I sort of wish it were explored a little more. Good boundaries really are important in this line of work, but good boundaries doesn’t translate to cold, compassionless work by itself. But, I realize this book wasn’t written for that. I can solemnly swear that none of my casenotes read like Mr. Baker’s reports.

I found a few characters pretty convenient (Helen), but enjoyed basically everyone. I kept thinking about the X-Men comics and the Mutant Registration Act while reading, another story metaphoric to LGBTQ+ experience.

This book had me SWEATING for the safety of the Bennett pack. Gordo’s backstory broke my heart and introduced so many more layers to the family we had come to love in Wolfsong. I loved getting the other side of the story from those who left for a few years in Wolfsong. I loved watching Gordo’s hard exterior crack and show the vulnerability underneath. His story with Mark helped to explain so much more of the pack’s dynamic & history.

The twists had me audibly gasping while being infuriated that I couldn’t read faster to see if the characters were safe. I had already preordered my copy of Heartsong before finishing this one (as I check the tracking number for updates every few hours).

TJ Klune has written an absolute masterpiece once again #packpackpack
