Elizabeth Knowles, after graduating in English at Exeter (specialising in Old English and Norse) became first a librarian, at Oxford, then a lexicographer with the Oxford University Press. As such, she began by doing library research for the Oxford English Dictionary's Supplement before becoming an Editor of the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.
