About the Author

Loren Leedy is a children's author and illustrator. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1959, and majored in art in college. She began making clay jewelry and chess sets out of whimsical animals, and eventually turned them into book characters. Her first published work was A Number of Dragons, show more in 1985. She has written and illustrated nearly 40 books since then. Her titles include: Missing Math: a Number Mystery, My Teacher is a Dinosaur, Seeing Symmetry, The Shocking Truth about Energy, Crazy Like a Fox: a Simile Story, Fraction Action, Blast off to Earth, and Postcards from Pluto. This book gets a YMMV because it’s interesting but you should always discuss this kind of book with your child so they can understand the bigger picture.

Synopsis: In this story, the numbers all over town suddenly disappear. The animals can’t count, use the phone, or even find out what time it is. Rulers, money, and computers have all become completely useless. The detective must stop whoever is stealing the numbers. The story has a sprinkling of useful vocabulary words and their definitions to help readers understand new terms. Grades K-3.

Response: This story is very fun with excellent, quick-paced rhymes. Each page depicts a new problem that would arise if numbers were to disappear from the world. It is a series of great examples of real world applications for math and numbers, which can help young children to understand the value of math in a practical way.… (more)
