Lots of contemporary poets are academics, people with a breadth of understanding of current and past poetic works. They may speak of people, movements, forms that I'm unfamiliar with. The editors of this volume intrigue me but leave me behind when they describe what the volume is about. Unfortunately, so do many of the poets themselves, both in their poems and in their notes and comments. Many of the poems seem to be, at least in part, about poetry itself.
It's hard, in a way, to read isolated poetry from a span of 25 years, written by 25 poets, each writing from a different context and a different point of view, especially for someone like me who doesn't keep up with changing trends.
I am glad I dipped into The Best of the Best, but am currently unwilling to research more than a very few authors or their poetry, so I'll look around for some other way to find current-day poets that speak to me.… (more)
