Lonely and bored in his towering apartment building, a child is attracted by clouds which have taken on the shapes of food. He begins eating the passing clouds and continues to eat them until there is not a single cloud left in the sky. The land goes dry and the inhabitants go thirsty, and the people start following the example of a man who is digging holes in the earth in search of water. All the children go out to help their parents, which is how our lonely boy makes lots of friends and begins playing with them, and in his distraction forgets to eat the clouds... so all is well again. A poignant message about the consequences of modern living and the isolation which both children and adults can suffer from in urban settings. Wonderful illustrations by Aurélia Fronty.… (more)

Phileas lives in a world where words are a commodity, treasured and valued but not equally available to all. As a result they must be used precisely, sparingly. When Phineas has a chance to express his feelings for a girl in his building, he shows us how the power of the right word can make the difference in a relationship. Dark smudgy illustrations fit the drab scene and contrast well with vibrant reds when Phileas's break-through occurs. Rich for discussion at upper elementary levels.
