"In the year 1889, when I was sixteen and my sister Beattie four years older, we were taken by our parents from our home in England to Jamaica where my father owned a number of properties and a house at Arcadia."
Thus begins this memoir by Diana Lewes (real name Nesta Sewell), written about 1930 but first published in 2013.
This is an entrancing read; the author writes of her life as a well-to-do young lady - dances, tennis, riding - and the world around her: the local people, the scenery, the sugar plantations, the animals. We get to know her family and friends ; but she delves deeper, as a young adult just starting to make sense of the world about her. She and her sisters mull over the complexity of character types, and the minefield that is social etiquette.
