This book went right past me. I didn't get it and after a while I did not want to.

Even though I knew the book was first published in 1990, I still was put off from the beginning by the time frame of the killing - some time way back when NYC had apartments for $100k. AGES ago. The old-fashionedness of everything was irritating and I could not stand it. Almost as if we were looking at a movie from the 1960s that aged badly - everyone wearing beehive hairdos and white gloves. Or beatnik black

And I did not like Anna, a self-pitying no one.

I received a review copy of "I, Anna" by Elsa Lewin (MysteriousPress.com/Open Road) though NetGalley.com.

Net Galley was kind enough to provide 'I, Anna' ( english version), so I could read and give a fair review. Thank you. To be honest when I first started to read I, Anna I did not like it at all. Could not get past the beginning. I have learned that if I go away, coming back at a later date, I often have more luck.. Luckily this was the case, which I am very glad. Once I got into the book, it was very good and caught me and I finished in 2 days. Finding I had to pick it up and find out what was going on.
I do not go over the plot in any review I write, as I find when we get out of books is very personal and I can change someone else's impression by what I may say. I found some of the actions of the police a little hard to believe. But lately we are finding that this is the case in real life.
Also, the twists and turns of the plot line hooked me early on. Thanks Net Galley.

Rape and Death

Anna, a lonely woman, single mother, recently divorced and low on funds. She hooks up with a stranger at a $7 per person singles party, and her life is forever changed. Not in a good way either, however, she has no memory of the brutal murder that ended this particular strangers life. The cop, Bernie, who is investigating the brutal murder, has been locked out of his own home where his brain damaged child and wife still live. If this was not enough horror, the writer tells the story of a boy, drugged, raped and murdered in an airport bathroom that Bernie’s department is now investigating. While undercover, Bernie finds himself falling for Anna, knowing well enough that she committed the murder he is investigating. Finding he can no longer hide the truth from Anna, he confesses he is a cop, and this is when Anna regains her memory. There are so many possible outcomes to this story, but what happens next is not what I would have even guessed. Rape, murder, abuse, lost souls, etc – what more could you want from a book. . . .… (more)
