Magazine article "about" Diana Vreeland, but the significance of the article resides in the large, one-page photo taken of Ms. Vreeland in 1942, as she stands on the southern wall of the newly built Pauson House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and constructed on a hill overlooking the then Squaw Peak and the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. As the house burned to the ground within the year, the fashion photo remains the best visual record of a truly remarkable house. The "idea" which the house engendered was used by Wright, again, in the house he built in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the Douglas Grants in 1951. Jorgine Boomer actually bought the site of the Pauson House, commissioning Wright to rebuilt the house. Eventually she constructed a different, smaller, but equally remarkable Wright house in 1953. The Pauson House ruins stood for years,as a mysterious ruin, until 32nd Street was pushed through the hillside in the 70's, obliterating the site.… (more)
