Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton was a poet (under the pseudonym Owen Meredith) and an accomplished diplomat who entered the British diplomatic service at age 18 and rose to become Viceroy of India from 1876 to 1880. He was named first Earl of Lytton after he resigned. His son Victor Bulwer-Lytton, 2nd Earl of Lytton, followed him to India as Governor of Bengal and served for a time as acting Viceroy.
