- Art historian, artist, and museum director Karl Madsen (1855-1938) is nationally and internationally recognized as one of Denmark's most influential art authorities and critics of all time. Author of many books on Danish, French, and Dutch Golden Age art, and a frequent contributor to Denmark's radical daily Politiken, he headed Denmark's national gallery, Statens Museum for Kunst, 1911-1925, and the Skagen Museum from 1928-1938.
