Loved A constellation of vital phenomena. Couldn't make it through this one. I just didn't care about the people or the places.

Other people will enjoy this book more than I did. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The writing was too self conscious to have much emotional impact on me.

This book is about several people in a small town during the Chechen wars, and how their lives are impacted by the wars and by each other. At first, the characters don't seem to have any connection to each other, but as the book progresses, the connections between them become tighter and tighter. That's not quite because the characters grow closer to each other, but more because the non-linear narrative reveals more and more coincidences in their lives. The characters struggle with love, forgiveness, and sacrifice in a myriad of ways.

Marra is an excellent writer: he's one of those writers who can paint a vivid picture in just a few words. There are snapshots from this book that I know will linger in my mind for years to come. His characters are complex and believable. This book is heart-rending and beautiful.

Despite my fascination with cinema, the book rambles with too many side stories that detract from main focus.
