Just a straight classic of early spy genre writing. So good.

This novella is about a young widow in Florence in the late 1930s. It's beautifully written, and the descriptions of the city and surrounding countryside will make you want to visit (or re-visit, in my case) tout de suite. The action of the story surrounds Mary Panton and three men - her significantly older suitor who has known her since she was a girl; an impoverished violin player; and a ne'er-do-well gentleman attracted by Mary's beauty. I don't want to say too much, as I can't figure out how to do so without spoilers; suffice it to say, I enjoyed the read. I went into it knowing nothing about it and was surprised by the fast pace and gorgeous writing.

A great book and worthy of being regarded as a Classic. Maugham's simple sentences and straightforward, linear narrative made it a riveting treat to read. I found it profoundly moving as the manifold life-progressions unfolded. Universal struggles concerned with life and living are examined carefully without sinking into religious didacticism.

My parent’s 1938 Hieneman (931 page) edition didn't quite last the distance with the spine falling apart. So, I had to carefully hold the book together, like life itself.

Perhaps any discussion about this book should necessarily begin with bondage. All the characters are bound to a form of trajectory. In part determined by character, in part by a genetic imperative and, in part by a vaguely predetermined sense of destiny. To this extent, it is as though everyone is on a kind a treadmill living out their lives and suffering as if in control, yet not. By the end of the book, Phillip’s deformity seems utterly normalised as if everyone carried some form of distortion. Even if Sally’s distortion is her sheer ripeness.
It is an illusion that youth is happy, an illusion of those who have lost it; but the young know they are wretched, for they are full of truthless ideals which have been instilled into them, and each time they come in contact with the real they are bruised and battered. (p. 177)
To the extent to which Phillip comes to conscious terms with his suffering, he formulates a kind of pithy life-rule that, in the end, is meaningless.
”Follow your inclinations with due regard to the policeman round the corner.” (p.192)
But one of the joys of Maugham is his ability to capture a state of mind that most of us find ourselves inhabiting:
His mind was concrete and moved with difficulty in regions of the abstract; but, even when he could not follow the reasoning, it gave him a curious pleasure to follow the tortuosities of thoughts that threaded their nimble way on the edge of the incomprehensible. (p. 195)
There is a darker side to this bondage as Phillip’s excruciating and masochistic infatuation with the sadistic Mildred wreaks havoc with his life. I find it hard to recall a more unpleasant character than Mildred:
She looked up the bodily functions as indecent, she had all sorts of euphemisms for common objects, she always chose an elaborate word as more becoming than a simple one: the brutality of these men was like a whip on her thin white shoulders, and she shuddered with voluptuous pain. (p. 588)

Ultimately, she is balanced by the wholesome ripeness of Sally,
“You are an awfully good sort,” he said to her once apropos of nothing at all. (p.919)
but such is Maugham’s sense of nuance that even this (perhaps) happy ending must inevitably come with an enormous (almost foreboding) sense of loss and uncertainty. Was it just me or just today's values? But I found Phillip's taking of Sally somewhat unsavoury and a betrayal of the trust granted to him by the Athelnys. Such a good book. Thank you, Ida, for getting me started.
As the weaver elaborated his pattern for no end but the pleasure of his aesthetic sense, so might a man live his life, or if one was forced to believe that his actions were outside his choosing, so might a man look at his life, that it made a pattern. (p. 809)
