Short biography
Verlaine Stoner McDonald grew up on the Sheridan County, Montana farm homesteaded by her great grandparents in 1909. She received her bachelor's degree from Seattle Pacific University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. Since 1995, she has been a professor in the Department of English, Theatre and Speech Communication at Berea College, and lives in Berea, Kentucky with her family.

Fascinating read. While we think of the West as a land of rugged individualism, this book tells a story of farmers who tried to band together to break monopolies and keep more of the money that their cros were worth. From its regional beginnings in the late 1800s, until just before the Depression, communism had adherents in the far northeat corner of Montana. Not in a mining or industrial town but rather in a place where farmers struggled to earn a decent living. As much a story of journalistic rivalry as politics, this very human story will interest anyone fascinated by peculiar moments in history.… (more)
