Ernst Lustig, a 44 year old divorcee and unemployed literary scholar, is entrenched in a morbid crisis. Wanting to have nothing more to do with this world, Lustig locks himself in his studio with the resolution not to come out until he has emerged from stagnation and completed his book on Schiller. But, how long will his rations hold out? Who will empty the mailbox? What will he do if someone comes to the door? Friends send e-mails and demand an explanation about his disappearance. In order to legitimize his absence, Lustig purports to have overcome his anti-tourist zeal and plans his fictional first trip abroad – an afterthought that brings relief until his friends require thorough travel reports. Lustig needs to come up with a plan…
