Maria de las Mercedes, comtesse de Merlin, is called one of the founders of Cuban women's literature. She was born Maria de las Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo into one of the leading families of the Cuban sugar aristocracy, and emigrated to Spain in 1802. In 1809, she married comte Antoine-Christophe Merlin (Merlin de Thionville), a general in Napoleon's army. Her salon in Paris attracted a wide circle of writers, artists, musicians, and Cuban travellers and exiles. She travelled back to Cuba in 1840 and wrote several books about her native island.
