Juan Carlos Méndez Guédez es un escritor venezolano nacido en Barquisimeto en 1967. Desde muy pequeño se trasladó a la ciudad de Caracas, donde vivía en la popular zona de Los Jardines del Valle, aunque mantuvo siempre una intensa relación con su ciudad natal. Obtuvo la Licenciatura en Letras por la Universidad Central de Venezuela con una tesis sobre los grupos poéticos "Tráfico" y "Guaire". Posteriormente se doctoró en Literatura Hispanoamericana por la Universidad de Salamanca con una tesis sobre el narrador venezolano José Balza.

Autor de quince libros entre novelas, volúmenes de cuentos y ensayos. Reside en España, país donde ha escrito y publicado la mayor parte de su obra. Forma parte de antologías del cuento en español como Líneas aéreas y Pequeñas resistencias y algunas de sus narraciones han sido publicadas en Suiza; Francia; Bulgaria, Italia, Eslovenia y Estados Unidos.

En Venezuela, sus textos forman parte de las dos antologías de relato corto más recientes en ese país: Las voces secretas, publicada por Alfaguara, y 21 del XXI, lanzada al mercado por Ediciones B.

Ha sido invitado a innumerables eventos en el mundo, como la Feria de Guadalajara, la Feria de Santiago de Chile, el Festival eñe de Madrid, y ha ofrecido conferencias en universidades e instituciones de Argelia, Colombia, Croacia, España, Francia, Suiza, Venezuela, etc.

En abril de 2013 su novela Arena Negra fue premiada como Libro del Año en Venezuela, por los libreros de ese país.

Juan Carlos Méndez Guédez is a Venezuelan writer born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela in 1967. From an early age, he and his family moved to Caracas, where he lived in the popular area of Los Jardines del Valle, but always kept a close connection with his native hometown. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the Central University of Venezuela with a thesis on poetry groups "Traffic" and "Guaire". Later he earned a Ph.D. in Hispanic American Literature from the University of Salamanca with a thesis on the Venezuelan writer José Balza.

He has published fifteen books including novels, volumes of short stories and essays. He lives in Spain, where he has written and published most of his work. His work has been part of several story anthologies in Spanish as Líneas aéreas and Pequeñas resistencias and some of his stories have been published in Switzerland, France, Bulgaria, Italy, Slovenia and the United States.

In Venezuela, his texts are part of two recent short story anthologies: Las voces secretas, published by Alfaguara, and 21 del XXI, that was commercially released by Ediciones B.

He has been invited to several important international literary events such as the International Guadalajara Book Fair, the Fair of Santiago de Chile, the Madrid eñe Festival, and has lectured at universities and institutions in Algeria, Colombia, Croatia, Spain, France, Switzerland, Venezuela, etc.

In April 2013 his novel Arena Negra was awarded Book of the Year by booksellers in Venezuela.
