Short biography
Methodist minister in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in the years leading up to the country's independence, speaking out for racial integration and justice; he then led the United Church of Zambia after independence. Returning to the UK, he was appointed as minister at Wesley's Chapel in London, and went on to become President of the Methodist Conference in 1976-1977. Familiar to many as a regular broadcaster on Radio 4's "Thought for the day" programme, he also held various posts within the BBC.
