About the Author

Dr Vivien Newman's passion for little known aspects of the First World War led to her PhD in women's war poetry. Now an independent researcher and member of the Royal Historical Society, a recent reviewer commented that she 'delivers cascades of insight and epiphany'. Determined that women's show more wartime endeavours should not be overlooked during the centenary years, she has published five books on this topic for Pen and Sword. In this, her sixth title, she turns her attention to another under-researched area, the children's experience, of war. show less

A good cursory look at the many different ways women served in WWI. Newman blends together first-hand accounts of service, paying attention to the class differences and tensions.
