This was an enjoyable story except, of course, in regards to the dark, tragic conclusion. The author’s writing style oscillated between interesting anecdotes and rather dry newspaper-like accounts of specific games. Obviously when you quote ballplayers, there’s going to be awkward grammatical issues, but why, for instance, would he write “…the Astros stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first six innings except the third and fourth.”? It seems as if he assembled this rather quickly without much editing as, I suppose, a newspaper reporter would be accustomed to. Nonetheless, if you’re an Astros fan you should enjoy this book. Living far from Houston in hostile American League territory, I was reduced to experiencing these regular season games through the low resolution provided by mlb.com, so it was great to be able to revisit these crazy seasons (all Astros’ seasons are insane it turns out, but at least in 2004 and 2005 they actually got somewhere!)… (more)
