Her awards include the John Burroughs Award for Nature Writing. She is the author of several nonfiction books about her work as a show more wildlife scientist in Africa, Cry of the Kalahari, The Eye of the Elephant, and Secrets of the Savanna. Delia Owens (born ca. 1949) is an American author and zoologist. Her debut novel Where the Crawdads Sing topped The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2019 for 25 non-consecutive weeks. The book has been on New York Times Bestsellers lists for more than a year. She has also written the memoirs Cry of the Kalahari, The Eye of the Elephant, and Secrets of the Savanna, with her then-husband, Mark, about their time studying animals in Africa.

I picked this book up on a whim and I was so pleasantly surprised. If the beautiful descriptions of the marsh landscapes don't draw you in then the courtroom drama definitely will. It is an inspiring coming-of-age story intertwined with a nail-biting murder mystery. The heavy themes of loving nature made this an even more fun read as it felt like I was exploring the marsh with Kya.

A girl is left largely alone to grow up in the tidal marshes of the coast of North Carolina, abandoned again and again by family, friends, and lovers; shunned by the townspeople; almost a feral savant with no formal education. Kya, aka Marsh Girl, aka Catherine Danielle Clark, is a well-drawn protagonist on this novel, which is part crime drama, part romance, part social commentary, part celebration of nature and place. At times I found the story tedious and somewhat beyond belief, but the writing is lyrical and the story memorable.… (more)
