The invasion of Puerto Rico in 1898 by the United States provoked a series of radical changes in the economy, political processes and cultural patterns of the Island. The Catholic Church found itself without the protection of the state under the American system of the "separation of Church and State". This text describe the manners in which religious orders, of both men and women, principally from the United States, aided the institutional Church in its efforts to adapt to this new situation.
