An interesting idea but I found the excution VERY slow and had a difficult time caring for the main character as we didn't get to know him very well. They did do a good job protraying the atomsphere of the early cold war very well.

This book of short stories by Dale Peck enticed me because of the O. Henry accolades bestowed upon the author (who was new to me), so I was delighted to receive an audiobook via the LibraryThing Early Reviewers scheme. But, alas, these stories are just not my style. The undertone is awkward, uncomfortable, uncouth. Maybe that's the point? I suppose the narrators do a good job, but my sense is that there's much more acting than necessary: in other words, were I to have seen the text, I might not have camped things up as much in my mind. (Actually, I'm sure I wouldn't have. So I guess I'm just not in the intended target audience.)… (more)
