This is a collection of writings and reminiscences by an Anishinabe botanist and medicine woman. She intended to write her life story but died before completion, so the result is not as cohesive as it might have been. It is still a worthy read, and one of the final chapters--her speech at a national teacher's conference given a few years before her death--is highly inspiring.
Keewaydinoquay begins with her training by an Anishinabe healer, which was interrupted (most of her younger years were covered in her book "Stories from my youth"). She speaks of her drive to get an education and professional acceptance in the white world, her experiences as a teacher. More briefly she goes into her life as a mother, as an abused wife and as a single parent.
She presents herself as someone interested in helping all people learn rather than on any focus on her specific tribe or Native peoples in general. However, we do know from a few comments that she had a role in native groups--this just isn't part of this book.

This collection of stories about her childhood has been finished posthumously by friends. It is a welcome portrayal of the early life of a woman who lived in the 1900's, taught at the university level and was a skilled native herbalist. Her delight in the natural world comes across strongly, as does her love of learning. She looks at her past life with adult eyes, pointing out for us the lessons she learned, how events influenced her desire to help people.
I have known of Keewaydinoquay for about 10 years and regret not having made her acquaintance when she was alive.
This is not written as a continuous novel. If you don't expect such a narrative you will appreciate what is available. I look forward to the sequel, again compiled by her friends.
