Allen M. Potter

This is a wonderful book! The caveat to that is that it is now almost fifty years old and so, one must accept that changes have occurred!

The reason that I hold this book in such high esteem, is due to the author, Allen Potter; he, clearly, wants to inform: he knows that he is smart, and does not need to prove it by confusing me, his humble reader. So many informational books written today, are packed with "in words", phrases that seem to be comprised of ordinary English words, but not in any logical sequence. Mr. Potter does not succumb to this foolhardy style.

I would not pretend that any single opus could convert a complete ignoramus, such as myself, into an expert upon the subject of another country's political system but, this little book has given me an overview of American politics.

One thing that I particularly appreciated in this tome, was the manner in which Mr Potter took the time to explain the method by which current policies had been developed. Like all systems that have been around for a while, some of the wrinkles have outgrown their initial, logical purpose and this style allows the reader to develop a greater all round comprehension. Idoubt that a modern work would have done the same.

Like all good books, this has set me scuttling for others on a host of subjects; some biographies of American Presidents and a book upon the Great depression, to name but two!… (more)
