Helen Prejean has 2 past events. (show) Durango Common Reading Experience - "Dead Man Walking" by Susan Helen Prejean, event at Fort Lewis College Fort Lewis College and Maria’s Bookshop invite you to join in the Common Reading Experience. Whether individually or with a book club or reading group, class or friend, pick up a copy of Dead Man Walking: The Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty that Sparked a National Debate by Sister Helen Prejean to read between now and October. Then, join fellow community members for a book talk and dialogue with Sister Helen in the Whalen Gymnasium at Fort Lewis College at 7 p.m. on October 21.
In her book, Sister Helen, a Roman Catholic nun, describes what it's like to walk a man on death row to his execution. As spiritual advisor to several men convicted of vicious crimes, Sr. Helen comes to know them well. She is horrified by their crimes; she is horrified that they themselves will be killed.
What is The Common Reading Experience?
The Common Reading Experience provides an avenue for discussion among students, faculty, administration and members of the Durango community. It is hoped that the ideas in the selected book will generate discussion anjd writing in a variety of disciplines, and the event provides a venue for more rigorous discussion of the book's ideas.
Additionally, the Community Common Reading Experience (in conjunction with the Fort Lewis College event) will host a variety of other events related to the book and culminating in Sister Helen's visit. Stay tuned here for more information about additional events and opportunities.
For starters, check out this Op-Ed in the Durango Herald on the topic.
