- Proferes grew up in Pennsylvania and served with distinction during World War II. While books that he authored included at least one heterosexually-oriented pulp novel, the majority were aimed at a gay male audience.
He wrote over 20 gay pulp novels published by Guild Press (Washington, DC) from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s. Many of his works had a recurring motif of homoeroticization of the military.
