Considering the limited resources the author does a good job of putting the service of African-American soldiers during the Revolution into perspective. What might catch out the unwary is that this not really a book for those with little grasp of the nature of the Continental Army, seeing as much time is spent on organizational history, if not more so, than the personal histories of those soldiers that Rees can identify.
