Jeffrey Richards was born to a British working class family and raised in Birmingham. He attended the University of Cambridge, where he earned a first class degree in history and won the Newling History Prize in 1965 and the Cambridge Classics Faculty Prize in 1967. He has published widely on different aspects of Victorian culture and his many other interests. During his nearly 40 years teaching at the University of Lancaster, Prof. Richards moved from being a medievalist to being one of the foremost historians of popular culture, film in particular. During the 1990s, he had a video column in the Mail on Sunday and, before that, wrote for the arts pages of the Daily Telegraph.
