Common Knowledge

After events go kinetic in the climax of "Fevered Star," and certain characters manage to dodge their intended deaths, I was wondering how Roanhorse was going to one-up the violence, and pull her chestnuts out of the fire. To put it another way, I've really been looking forward to this novel, but I was also afraid of a let down. Well, this only turns out to be a good novel, but I can't call it a great novel. Without giving away many plot points, since the book just came out, I look over the structure of the three books and it feels like events were really front-loaded, meaning that the reader is spending a long time just waiting to see which characters wind up escaping doom in the end, and which do not. More of a 3.5. A bit of a mixed bag. Some--Maul, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka--were really great. Others just felt like a rehash of the episode.

A great horror-adventure story with main characters who just happen to native. Native culture is suffused through out, but it never felt heavy-handed or overwrought. The characters are interesting and well-developed, and finish the story with unresolved issues left to the sequel. I only really had two quibbles. First, I wanted MORE monsters. The middle of the book goes a long time with our hero monsterslayer not actually slaying any monsters. Second, I think I would've benefited from a glossary or appendix, complete with pronunciations, which gave me a bit of info on all the Navajo words & names. The book is written in such a way that context helps the reader a lot, but it would've just been nice to have that clarity.… (more)
