Marie Claire Eugénie Mistral Dutheil, known as the comtesse de La Rochère, was born in Toulouse, France to a merchant and his wife. In 1828, she married Alexis Dutheil, later Dutheil de la Rochère, with whom she had several children. She published a number of novels, including L'amandier (1828), Tebaldo (1847), Les châtelaines de Roussillon (1848), Caroline de Terville (1851), L'aumônier du régiment (1855), and L'orphelin d'Evenos (1876). Her book Rome, souvenirs historiques et artistiques de 1849 et 1850, was the result of her travels and stay in that city.
