Spitzen draws on the tango-craze that swept the Netherlands in the early 2000s, following the news that crown-prince Willem Alexander was to marry a glamorous blonde from Buenos Aires. Han Bijman is a middle-aged bachelor with an administrative job at Shell. On the advice of his tango-mad upstairs neighbour he takes lessons and goes to a dance event, which brings him together with the beautiful, sexy, but obviously unreliable Esther. Their relationship goes through all kinds of twists and turns of bandoneon-related passion and deceit, with dull Han almost (but perhaps not quite) catapulted into the role of the jealous Latin lover. Publieke werken was een van de boeken die ik op mijn lijst had gezet voor mijn Nederlands mondeling vorige week. Ik was waarschijnlijk een beetje optimistisch geweest bij aanvang van dit boek van Thomas Rosenboom, en daarom had ik ook verwacht dat ik dit boek ruimschoots op tijd uit zou hebben (was ruim twee weken voor het mondeling begonnen), maar dat bleek niet helemaal zo te zijn...

Het verhaal gaat over de twee neven Chris Anijs en Walter Vedder, beiden mannen die niet al te geslaagd zijn in het leven. Vedder krijgt ook nog te horen dat zijn huis plaats moet maken voor het nieuw te bouwen Victoria hotel. Hij is erop gebrand hier veel winst op te halen, en daarmee de overtocht naar Amerika voor 100 arme turfgraversfamilies te financieren....

De reden waarom ik dit boek niet ruim op tijd af had, lag met name bij het feit dat het boek me niet echt pakte, Er gebeurde vrij weinig, de sfeer is erg naargeestig en de schrijfstijl is erg beschouwend (ik zou bijna denken dat ik met een impressionistisch boek te maken had). Het duurde ruim 400 pagina's voordat ik het interressant begon te vinden en het lezen was sneller en makkelijker werd. Voor mij was dit boek dan ook niet echt een topper, want het kon mij niet echt boeien. Met moeite heb ik het dan toch uitgelezen en daar was ik dan twee dagen voor mijn mondeling klaar mee. Gelukkig maar dat het het laatste boek was dat ik nog moest lezen! Ik zou het boek het liefst twee en een halve ster geven, maar zal vandaag in een gulle bui dan maar afronden op drie sterren. Maar dan wel een zwakke drie sterren. Markant detail nog, het was me nog nooit opgevallen (en ben toch al heel wat keren in Amsterdam geweest) dat het Victoriahotel om twee huisjes heen is gebouwd...… (more)

I wasn't blown away by this short novella. I generally like Rosenboom, but somehow this just didn't speak to me, and I never really became involved with the main characters - I really just found them slightly annoying and their adventures uninteresting.

The book tells the story of a middle aged man who finds his first love, but soon realizes that she is in love with someone else. Though at first he finds it exciting to know that she is deceiving the other man to be with him, he soon becomes jealous and unhappy with the situation. In the end, the relationship doesn't last.

I found the story to be quite predictable and not very enticing. It's really a pretty common story - man falls in love with woman, woman turns out to not be as faithful as he would like, and in the end they break up. Somehow I wasn't really interested in the story or the characters. The man, Han, could have been an amiable character, but in stead I mainly found him annoying, lying and deceiving as much as the woman does.
Though the writing style is nice, the story just really isn't very special or intriguing.… (more)
