This is one of several Sander's Series books that help illustrate if nothing the type pedagogy prevalent in 19th century American classrooms. This is described as Elementary, but as Sander's himself explains in the preface, the reading skills taught here depend upon the completion of skills in the First and Second books.

I have more than one of these Sanders's Readers. This one was published in Sacramento, Ca for the schools there. Although it is labeled at Elementary, the reading skill required would be high school or higher today. The initial chapters scare the student away with covering topics of articulation, inflections, Pitch of Voice, Modulation, Rhetorical Pause, etc. So, besides fact that his is hand-me-down volume from my ancestors, the book provides insight into the education theory of the mid-19th century when it was published.… (more)

This classic school book was in use during Civil War period. Must have for the classic educational textbook library. This text was required by an Act of Congress and within the state Pennsylvania public school system. This book claims to be "a choice of collection of reading lessons in prose, poetry, from the most approved authors, and for use within academies, and higher classes in schools, etc." The level of reading appears to be high school level. It includes 2 songs in the back: Never Say Fail and I Love the West. The cover is embossed hardboard of high quality and durability in a pocket sized volume. This volume was printed in Chicago by S.C. Griggs as embossed on both front and back cover.… (more)
