Tom Sargent

Tom Sargent was the artist predominantly featured in The Erotic Review in the manifestation that was current when this volume of his work appeared. It contains some of the material that first appeared there, but 'Fireside Orgies' presents mostly fresh work. Sargent has a style ideally suited to erotic subjects, being clear and humorous it its portrayal of intimate behaviour in scenarios appropriate to eroticism. His women are uniformly buxom, even when they are lightly built, and both them and their partners always react enthusiastically to their joint 'activities'. Some cartoon strips from the Erotic Review demonstrate his ease in illustrating sexy story lines, and a few extracts from the Sargent-illustrated EPS 'Scarlet Library' erotic reissues. All Erotic Print Society books are marvellous, but I think this has to be my favorite. A huge collection of Tom Sargent's deliciously rude drawings, including work done for the Erotic Review, illustrations for other Erotic Print Society publications and a wealth of other material unavailable anywhere else. Sargent perfectly captures a very British kind of smut, with echoes of sea-side postcards and Carry-On films. Humour is never far away and all the time-honoured preoccupations of our repressed little island are present: French maids and game-keepers; vicars and sixth-formers; and of course, the ultimate Vice Anglais, spanking.
