Short biography
Rachela Walshaw and her younger brother Samuel (Shmulek) Walshaw were born to a Jewish family in Wonchok, Poland. Nazi Germany invaded their homeland in World War II and burned their town. With their parents and siblings, they fled to the nearby city of Skarzko, where they were forced into a ghetto. Eventually they were separated and sent to slave labor and concentrations camps in Poland and Germany. Rachela and Sam survived but nearly all of their large family perished. She married Herb Schlufman and emigrated to the USA in 1949; Sam went to the UK, where he became a successful businessman. Rachela and Sam wrote a joint memoir, From Out of the Firestorm: A Memoir of the Holocaust, published in 1991. She is also the author of an individual work, Rachela: The Trials and Triumphs of a Holocaust Survivor in the Free World (2004).
