He was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon, son of John Shakespeare, a prosperous merchant and local politician and Mary Arden, who had the wealth to send their oldest son to Stratford Grammar School. At 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, the 27-year-old daughter of a local farmer, and they had their first daughter six months later. He probably developed an interest in theatre by watching plays performed by traveling players in Stratford while still in his youth. Some time before 1592, he left his family to take up residence in London, where he began acting and writing plays and poetry. By 1594 Shakespeare had become a member and part owner of an acting company called The Lord Chamberlain's Men, where he soon became the company's principal playwright. His plays enjoyed great popularity and high critical acclaim in the newly built Globe Theatre. It was through his popularity that the troupe gained the attention of the new king, James I, who appointed them the King's Players in 1603. Before retiring to Stratford in 1613, after the Globe burned down, he wrote more than three dozen plays (that we are sure of) and more than 150 sonnets. He was celebrated by Ben Jonson, one of the leading playwrights of the day, as a writer who would be "not for an age, but for all time," a prediction that has proved to be true. Today, Shakespeare towers over all other English writers and has few rivals in any language. His genius and creativity continue to astound scholars, and his plays continue to delight audiences. Many have served as the basis for operas, ballets, musical compositions, and films. While Jonson and other writers labored over their plays, Shakespeare seems to have had the ability to turn out work of exceptionally high caliber at an amazing speed. At the height of his career, he wrote an average of two plays a year as well as dozens of poems, songs, and possibly even verses for tombstones and heraldic shields, all while he continued to act in the plays performed by the Lord Chamberlain's Men. This staggering output is even more impressive when one considers its variety. Except for the English history plays, he never wrote the same kind of play twice. He seems to have had a good deal of fun in trying his hand at every kind of play. Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets, all published on 1609, most of which were dedicated to his patron Henry Wriothsley, The Earl of Southhampton. He also wrote 13 comedies, 13 histories, 6 tragedies, and 4 tragecomedies. He died at Stratford-upon-Avon April 23, 1616, and was buried two days later on the grounds of Holy Trinity Church in Stratford. His cause of death was unknown, but it is surmised that he knew he was dying. (Bowker Author Biography) — biography from Hamlet … (more) |

Shakespeare 451 On the anniversary of Shakespeare's 450th birthday (2014) and the 400th anniversary of his death (2016), the George P. Lacay Endowed Lecture Fund has invited Professor Marjorie Garber to commemorate the occasion with a lecture in the ICC Auditorium. A reception will follow. A year ago, Shakespeareans all over the world were celebrating the 450th anniversary of the playwright’s birth; now, as 2016 approaches, they are gearing up for comparable celebrations, this time commemorating the 400th anniversary of his death. But what happens after the celebrations are over? What roles can Shakespeare, Shakespeare studies, and—especially-- the teaching of Shakespeare play in an educational environment increasingly focused on science, technology, engineering and math?
Marjorie Garber is the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of English and Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University, and Chair of the Committee on Dramatic Arts. She has published seventeen books and edited seven collections of essays on topics from Shakespeare to literary and cultural theory to the arts and intellectual life. Newsweek magazine chose Shakespeare After All as one of the five best nonfiction books of 2004, and praised it as the “indispensable introduction to an indispensable writer ... Garber’s is the most exhilarating seminar room you’ll ever enter.” (parlerodermime)… (more)

Summer of Shakespeare: The Tempest The Tempest, one of Shakespeare’s late plays, is a fantasy, a romance, a comedy, a family drama--unquestionably genre-defying and difficult to classify. Some scholars believe it was the last play Shakespeare wrote. We’ll discuss what context that thought brings to the play, as well as what the play says about colonialism, identity, and more. And, of course, we’ll talk about the magic of The Tempest. O brave new world, that has such people in it!

Summer of Shakespeare: Scenes for Kids You may not know it, but kids are the ideal audience for Shakespeare. Young kids thrive on gripping stories and engaging storytelling. Rather than being a barrier, Shakespearean language and wordplay are a great point of interest for kids--how many times as a child did you fixate on one new word, and say it over and over until it didn’t sound like a word anymore? Those kinds of children will love Shakespeare and his language, just as much as the magic, the characters, and the twisty plots. More than that, kids are smart, and they need smart material to keep up with them.
Bring your young readers to our children’s Summer of Shakespeare program, an abridged version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream presented by the talented teen actors of Main Street Theater’s Summer Shakespeare program. The play will run approximately 45 minutes, and there will be a 15 minute talkback afterward for the audience to interact with the director and performers. This event is designed for children ages 6-10.

Summer of Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice The Merchant of Venice has a complicated and controversial history--in fact, that’s probably the one thing most people know about this play. We’ll discuss the way this play constructs its characters, the society they live in, and the themes of justice that pervade it--as well as how these themes are juxtaposed against the stereotypes and racism present in the text. How do modern productions handle this? How do we interpret this play, and how do we present it responsibly?
