The story is finally gaining traction and Shen Qiao is now acting more than reacting to the events in the story. The relationship between Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi is finally getting somewhere too.

At the same time, it feels that the author’s attention to detail is flagging. They could start the scene by saying it was heavy with rain, but forget that detail by the end of the chapter and say it was a hot sweltering day.
Fight scenes make less sense (and I’m not sure whether this is bad translation or due to the original text), characters would be described as making a move but then end up elsewhere without explanation.

There was actually a fight scene in chapter 78 where the description stops halfway through an enemy’s move and then in the next paragraph Shen Qiao is running through a forest and has been for a while. You then find out through a conversation between Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi that a fourth person (you’ve never heard of before) had entered the fight which forced Shen Qiao to flee.
It had all the feeling of the author writing themselves into a corner with the fight and decided to give up halfway through.

With Shen Qiao's power being "reset" (so to speak)[something happens to one of the characters], I feel like the story's finally starting.
Don't get me wrong, the story so far has been interesting, but I couldn't help but feel that SQ has been a little passive for the first 1.5 books. Now that he's taken the helm of the story, so to speak, I'm looking forward to seeing how he deals with YWS.

So happy to finally have this! I had a great time re-reading it, and again meeting the amazing cast in the story. Shen Qiao is lovely, Yan Wushi is conniving and hilarious, and the rest of the cast are a lot of fun. The world in this story is neat, and the plot is a lot of fun. Me.Mimo's art is absolutely beautiful, and I'm so happy to have a novel with Mimo's art on it!! I love Mimo's interpretations of the different characters, and the scenes Mimo drew look amazing! The interior art by Furifuricchin is also lovely!

Overall, a beautiful novel. I only spotted a couple typos, though if there were any translation issues, I have no idea. It read well by and large, and was an enjoyable story. The pronunciation guide still doesn't use IPA for some reason, and I'm not sure why. There is a lot of helpful information otherwise for newcomers to danmei, wuxia, and xanxia. Looking forward to volume 2!

This is such a strange one to review, because it reads more like a history book mixed in with philosophical explorations in a lot of places rather than a character-driven story, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. On the other hand, the parts that are focused on the protagonist and the love interest are absolutely wonderful, and there are a lot of ridiculous and fun tropey shenanigans to be had.

In the beginning there's a decent amount of fun fainting maiden stuff with Shen Qiao, and a bit of tropey fun with Yan Wushi teasing Shen Qiao more and more. The start of the 2nd third of the story is a bit slower and probably the more boring part of the book, because it gets into a lot of historical politics and discussing the ins and outs of the magical martial arts forms rather than focusing on the leads, or even some of the funny side characters. But around the 60% mark or so, it gets back to more of the tropey fun stuff. There are a few more slow bumps, but the relationship between the leads develops more, plot threads start to wind down, and the whole thing ends with a series of absolutely brilliant, spicy, and fun Extras.

Overall, this is a very fun webnovel. If I were to compare it to more popular webnovels like "Heaven Official's Blessing", in ways it's a bit more boring than the more boring parts of that one, but in other places, it's very funny and enjoyable. The leads are great, the cast is interesting, and it even seems to have a canon lesbian pairing, which I didn't think I'd see outside a baihe. If nothing else, the Extras made the whole thing worth it. They're hilarious and beautiful, unambiguously queer, and very wonderful to read after all the hijinks in the main plot. A great webnovel. Loved it.
