Rosita Steenbeek werd in 1959 in Utrecht geboren en groeide op in Amersfoort. Ze studeerde af in de Nederlandse taal- en letterkunde, en studeerde ook enige tijd theologie en klassieke talen.
In 1985 vestigde Steenbeek zich in Italië. Zij ging op zoek naar werk als actrice en vertaalde werk van Alberto Moravia en Susanna Tamaro. Ook schreef ze artikelen voor o.a. Vrij Nederland. Als romanschrijver debuteerde ze met De laatste vrouw (1994), een boek dat in vele talen vertaald werd en waarmee Steenbeek internationale bekendheid verwierf. In het werk van Rosita Steenbeek – onder andere Schimmenrijk, Ballets Russes en Intensive Care – is de (naderende) dood regelmatig een thema.
