I enjoyed this book because it portrayed the accomplishment of an African American woman before the civil rights movement. The book was a biography written in chronological order which made it easier to follow. I liked how there were a lot of small pictures inserted into the text and how every few pages was a full page picture. I liked how many of the pictures were in black and white, that is consistent with the time frame and it made the color pictures stand out all that much more. I also liked how the book had very thick outer margins and would have a little snippet written in a different color to pique the reader’s interest and make them want to read the text. I also really liked that at the end of the book was a Glossary explaining new words, as the book was written for children there was a lot of Academic text introduced like contralto and baritone. The theme of the book was to tell the life story of a famous woman.… (more)
