After serving in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964, where he rose to the rank of captain, Stong did a post-doctoral fellowship at Oxford University from 1966 to 1968 and then was an assistant professor of mathematics at Princeton University. Stong joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1968, becoming a full professor of mathematics in 1970 and serving as chairman of the Mathematics Department. He retired in 2007.
