About the Author

Born in Leeds, England, Charles Stross knew he wanted to be a science fiction writer from the age of six. Despite this, he went to university in London and qualified as a Pharmacist. He made his first writing sale to Interzone in 1986, and sold about a dozen stories elsewhere throughout the late show more 1980s and early 1990s. He now writes fiction full-time, has sold about 16 novels, has won one Hugo award and been nominated nearly a dozen times, and has been translated into about a dozen languages. He is the author of the Merchant Princes series. His latest book, The Revolution Business, is the fifth in this series. He lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, with his wife Feorag. Double-oh-geek in a Lovecraftian present day sacred service, what's not to like? Stross has all the right ingredients for greatness BOFH meets Cthulhu. Somehow the story blows out of proportion way to early and shifts gear in a way that makes me feel that it should have been 2 or 3 short stories instead. Deeply disappointed (or had my hopes to high) moving on to the Jennifer Morgue hoping the grand story and plot lines have matured.

The first chapter of this is called "Lobsters", and I'm reminded that I once had a restaurant meal of some smaller member of the family, drenched in a delicious butter sauce, but so much work to extract from their shells that I wasn't convinced I ended up consuming more calories than I'd expended in the process.

I tend to have the same experience any time I try to read cyberpunk / singularity style stories. There's so much novel technology (and anti-capitalism ideology) crammed into every sentence it's an assault on my mental senses, and it makes it a slog when actually I just want to... read a story. But these aren't really about the story (which, at least in the first chapter, is fairly slim) so much as the journey along the way. Really I need to accept that this sub-genre is never going to click with me.… (more)

This was a weird story that I wasn't sure of, until the last 3rd of the book. After the Singularity, most humans have uploaded themselves into the cloud and are off-world. Huw is one of the ones that remain dirtside. Somehow he is tapped to speak for humanity to keep an alien intelligence from destroying and absorbing our world (think Vogon contructor fleet). It was the odd post-cyberpunk fare that I'd come to expect from Doctorow. A decent listen.
