Short biography
John S. Sweeney was an early leader in the Restoration Movement in Illinois. He studied law in his youth following the usual method of his time and place, self-education and apprenticeship. Before entering the bar, however, he determined to preach instead, served churches throughout Illinois and adjoining states. He was especially noted as a debater, having held some 75 debates in his lifetime, though he was said to have declined as many invitations as he accepted.
